Our hospital
The Alberta Children's Hospital opened in Calgary, Alberta in September 2006, becoming the first free-standing pediatric facility to be built in Canada in more than 20 years. On September 27, 2006, a convoy of ambulances travelled along Crowchild Trail to carefully transport 51 of our community's sickest children from the old hospital on Richmond Road to the colourful state-of-the-art facility in northwest Calgary. Those young patients marked the start of a new era in children's health in this community.
Family centred care is a philosophy celebrated by the Alberta Children's Hospital, that recognizes the important role families play in the physical, psychological and spiritual well-being of their children. This model of care embraces family members as key partners in a child's healing system. This philosophy is most evident in the actual design of the building.
The hospital was designed by the people who use the building the most – kids, families, physicians and staff. The colourful LEGO-inspired building has become a Calgary landmark and one that is unique in every way. Over 102,000 kids rely on care from the hospital each year and you can help assure the long-term health of our children.
Your gift to the Alberta Children's Hospital Foundation will fund excellence in family centred child health programs, specialized life-saving equipment and advanced pediatric research.
The Alberta Children's Hosptial cares for children from newborn to age 17 from across Alberta, southeastern British Columbia and southwestern Saskatchewan as multi-disciplinary teams work together to promote healing through family centred care.
