Donors Making a Difference
Winter 2009
Kinsmen Club of Stampede City
The Kinsmen Club of the Stampede City is one of the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation’s most loyal and generous donors.
Since 1993, with the launch of the first Kinsmen Children’s Hospital Home Lotto, its partners and members have raised a staggering $22.2 million for the Alberta Children’s Hospital. We’re so grateful to them for playing a big part in making the hospital what it is today.
It’s hard to believe that this was the lotto’s 17th year! This year’s Lotto gift will complete the funding to purchase state-of-the-art technology which will enable our specialists to map brain activity in kids… playing a crucial role in the diagnosis, treatment and research of illnesses like epilepsy, cancer, stroke and learning disability. Part of the lotto money is also contributing to our exciting new childhood cancer initiative ‘New Cures for Kids’.
Thank you to the members of Kinsmen Club of the Stampede City and their partners including:
- Shane Homes
- Genstar Development
- Stride Management
- All the suppliers and trades

Alberta Children's Hospital Foundation - Art Advisory Committee
The Alberta Children's Hospital Foundation is proud and grateful to have dedicated community volunteers who are committed to putting bright and colorful art work on the walls of the hospital. The committee was formed in 2005 prior to the move to the new hospital in September 2006 and it was their vision to provide a rich and healing environment through the display and creation of artworks designed to appeal to children, families, staff and visitors.
For the first time, the Art Advisory Committee - Clinics and Waiting Rooms Sub-committee organized and hosted a special event inviting friends, family and neighbours to a wine-tasting and coffee party, raising over $16,000.
The money will be used to fund a wonderful project which gives children from the community the opportunity to create artwork in a workshop setting which is then donated to the hospital.
Thank you to our Art Advisory Committee and to all those in the community who chose to take part in this wonderful fundraising initiative!
Spring 2009
Trican Well Services Ltd
Trican Well Services has been a supporter of the Alberta Children's Hospital Foundation since 1998.
In 2004, Trican Well Services donated $200,000 in support of a Special Procedures Room in the Oncology unit at the Alberta Children's Hospital. This room gives caregivers in the pediatric oncology outpatient clinic access to the very best in technology. Patients receive treatment quicker and in an environment more conducive to healing.
This room includes an Anesthesia Machine which allows the oncologist to perform procedures in a painless and motionless manner. This leading edge technology is crucial for the types of procedures being performed on oncology patients and also reduces the time these children are waiting to have their treatment.
We are truly grateful for Trican Well Services' relationship with the Alberta Children's Hospital Foundation. On behalf of the 76,000 kids and families who visit our hospital annually, thank you Trican!
IBM Canada and IBM Employees' Charitable Fund
The Alberta Children's Hospital Foundation is grateful to have community partners like IBM and their employees. Since 1990, IBM Canada and IBM Employees' Charitable Fund have generously provided over $100,000 in support for child health programs, specialized life saving equipment, and advanced pediatric research and education at the Alberta Children's Hospital.
This year, IBM Employees' Charitable Fund's support will enable specialists in our Genetics Clinic to purchase a piece of equipment called Vibraflex.
Vibraflex will help children with diseases such as spina bifida and cerebral palsy to exercise muscles that they are unable to utilize alone - helping them to avoid wheelchair dependency, osteoporosis, and joint contractures which could require surgery.
Thank you IBM Canada and IBM Employees' Charitable Fund - we are proud to partner with you in making child health history!
Winter 2008
Phil and Harriet Libin and Dr. Ralph and Sheila Gurevitch
The Alberta Children's Hospital Foundation is grateful to have generous donors like Phil and Harriet Libin and Dr. Ralph and Sheila Gurevitch. Their contribution of $25 thousand for Parent Accommodation Rooms in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit will provide a private and comfortable space for parents to rest, so they can be more of a comfort to their child in the PICU.
The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at the Alberta Children's Hospital provides critical care support to families of southern Alberta, southwestern Saskatchewan and southeastern British Columbia.
Sherritt Power
For the past two years, Sherritt Power has been a dedicated supporter of the Alberta Children's Hospital Foundation through their annual Sherritt Power Charity Classic golf tournament. We are grateful that Sherritt Power has once again chosen to support the 76 thousand children and families who rely on care from the Alberta Children's Hospital each year!
This year, the over $65,000 in proceeds from the event will be used to purchase a Luminex Genetic Analyzer. This state of the art piece of equipment will provide an earlier and more accurate diagnosis of Cystic Fibrosis and other genetic disorders. This will result in earlier treatment and an improvement in the quality of life for those children living with these conditions.
Thank you to Sherritt Power and to all those in the community who have chosen to take part in this incredible fundraising initiative!
ServIS Inc
ServIS Inc, a Calgary-based information technology consulting firm, has been a generous partner of the Alberta Children's Hospital for eight years, donating over $65,000 to fund life-saving equipment, family centred programming and innovative research.
Over the past eight years, ServIS's incredible generosity has helped us to fully fund a Computed Radiography Reader and a High Efficiency Blood Warmer for Emergency Trauma - two essential pieces of equipment that help our doctors and nurses to deliver the very best in care to children and families in our community. This past year, ServIS joined our community supporters in helping us to fund the construction costs for Rotary/Flames House, Alberta's first pediatric hospice.
We are tremendously grateful for the support we receive from ServIS Inc. On behalf of the kids and families who continue to benefit from your ongoing generosity, thank you ServIS!
VariSystems Inc.
VariSystems Inc., a Calgary-based manufacturing company, has been a generous partner of the Alberta Children's Hospital for over seven years. Each year, VariSystems donates over $10,000 to purchase equipment, enhance research and enrich programming to ensure that children in southern Alberta, southwestern Saskatchewan and southeastern BC receive world-class care.
In 2007, VariSystems' support enabled the hospital to purchase four desktop units for the Alberta Children's Hospital Telehealth Program. The Telehealth Program brings follow-up, consultations and transitional care to children and families who are receiving treatment at the Alberta Children's Hospital (ACH) but live outside of Calgary. Telehealth technology allows physicians at ACH to share information visually and in real time to home community physicians, so families don't need to travel to Calgary for follow-up care. VariSystems' support of individual desktop units has further enhanced the Telehealth Program, by enabling physicians at our hospital to access Telehealth directly from their office or clinic, improving efficiency and patient care management.
Thank you VariSystems Inc. We are truly grateful for your continued generosity and for sharing with us the vision of healthier futures for children in our community.

Provident Energy Ltd.
Whether it's through employee-driven fundraising initiatives, annual golf tournaments, volunteer leadership, matching gifts or sponsorship of events, Provident Energy Ltd. continues to put the health of kids in our community first.
Since 2001, Provident Energy Ltd. has donated over $100,000 to child health excellence at the Alberta Children's Hospital. In addition to Provident Energy Ltd.'s exceptional financial support, last year Provident's employees enthusiastically volunteered on our Radiothon phone banks. Thank you Provident Energy Ltd. and your employees. We are truly grateful for your continued enthusiasm and support of the Alberta Children's Hospital.
Costco
Costco has been a Children's Miracle Network sponsor and a donor to the Alberta Children's Hospital Foundation for over 15 years.
Every year Costco stores in Calgary and Southern Alberta raise money for the kids in the hospital by selling balloon icons and holding events such as bottle drives, prize draws, auctions and this year even Sumo Wrestling!
This year they have raised over $230,000 and we are very grateful to their staff and customers for all their support.
Thanks Costco!
Hallmark Tubulars
Every year Hallmark Tubulars holds an annual Golf Tournament for their customers, suppliers and vendors at the Kananaskis Golf and Country Club. The winning team is asked to choose their charity of choice to receive a $5000 donation from Hallmark. This year, the winning team chose The Alberta Children's Hospital Foundation! We truly appreciate Hallmark Tubulars' support. We feel very blessed to be a part of a community so dedicated to our kids!
Canadian Pacific
It is said that "play is children's work". Canadian Pacific recognizes the importance of play in any child's life - no exception when they are visiting or staying in the hospital. It is because of this that Canadian Pacific chose to designate their generous $250,000 donation to support the creative play spaces throughout the new Alberta Children's Hospital. This donation has helped to ensure the hospital is welcoming and calming for children. The supervised playrooms, outdoor leisure areas and waiting room play areas let kids know that being sick or injured does not preclude being able to play and have fun.
At the new Alberta Children's Hospital, the commitment to Creative Play Spaces has been a top priority and has resulted in more "special spaces" for children and families than ever before. On behalf of all of the children who visit our hospital, thank you Canadian Pacific!
Kira's Day reaches half a million for Rotary/Flames House
Beautiful Kira Pauline Bekker was born on June 6, 2003. At just six months old, Kira was diagnosed with a rare degenerative brain condition. Given just weeks to live, Kira fought - and defying all odds, lived to be 19 months old. To pay tribute to Kira's short life, friends and family come together around her birthday each year to raise funds for the Alberta Children's Hospital. "Kira's Day" is a fun-filled evening of entertainment, food with flair, and a now-infamous silent and live auction. In just five years, Kira's Day has raised $500,000 for Rotary/Flames House, the first hospice for children in Alberta. The support received in memory of Kira will be recognized in the Living Room at the hospice.
The Alberta Children's Hospital Foundation is truly grateful to Jennifer and Paul Bekker, and the dedicated community that pays tribute to Kira each year.
Shelley and James Campbell's Great Escape
Shelley and James Campbell celebrated two amazing accomplishments this past April. In addition to completing a global scavenger hunt that took them to Beijing, Kathmandu and Athens to name just a few destinations, they raised an amazing $20,000 in support of kids in our community.
As part of their adventure, Shelley and James invited their family and friends to join them in supporting Rotary/Flames House, the first hospice for children in Alberta. Many children and families at the hospice will benefit from the generosity of Shelley and James, and the amazing community that joined them in celebrating their adventure.
Thank you Shelley and James!

This year Elk Valley Coal and its employees showed true enthusiasm when it comes to supporting kids and families. Through fundraising activities, like sumo wrestling, and generous individual and corporate donations, more than $250,000 was donated in support of kids and families at our hospital.
This year, Elk Valley Coal's Caring for Kids campaign will support the O-arm, innovative imaging technology that allows surgeons to see organs and structures that are hidden from the naked eye. The campaign will also provide financial assistance to hundreds of kids and families through the Special Children's Fund.
Thanks to the generosity of Elk Valley Coal and its employees, over $1 million has now been donated to the Alberta Children's Hospital!
ATB Financial teams up with chuck wagon drivers to help kids
In addition to raising over $1 million to date for the Alberta Children's Hospital, ATB Financial also helped bring the Calgary Stampede to children at our hospital.
Chuck wagon driver Chad Harden, sponsored by ATB Financial, hosted families for a behind the scenes visit to his barns on the Stampede grounds along with drivers Troy Dorchester, Troy Flad, Rick Fraser, Doug Irvine and Luke Tournier. The afternoon of stampeding included a private tour, pony rides, visits with Chad's mascot - Skippy the Squirrel, and of course, the opportunity to meet the chuck wagon drivers and their families. For the kids who were unable to tour the barns, the same group of drivers also came to the hospital for a visit.
Indeed, the opportunity to meet the warm-hearted cowboys was well enjoyed by many children and families who rely on care from the Alberta Children's Hospital.
Bonavista Petroleum Ltd.
Bonavista Petroleum Ltd. has been a dedicated supporter of the Alberta Children's Hospital for the past five years. Since 2002, Bonavista Petroleum has donated $50,000 to child health excellence at the Alberta Children's Hospital. Hunt Consolidated
Thanks to our many generous donors, and our friends at Hunt Oil Company of Canada, Inc, (A division of Hunt Consolidated Inc) ('Hunt'), Alberta's first pediatric hospice and respite centre - Rotary/Flames House, is now fully funded! Hunt has generously supported palliative care at the hospital since 2002, donating $100,000 to the palliative suites at the new Alberta Children's Hospital. More recently, in light of the Foundation's decision to build Rotary/Flames House, Hunt has once again donated $100,000 to the construction of this incredible facility.
The groundbreaking ceremony on April 7th, 2008 marked the beginning of construction on this new and exciting project. With construction now underway, we can look forward to a projected opening in the summer of 2009! Rotary/Flames House will provide hospice, respite, and transitional care to over 400 families a year. This facility will not only give these families the opportunity to recharge mentally and physically with the comfort of knowing their children are in good hands, but will also allow the family to experience the end of their child's life peacefully, in the comfort of a home setting, with medical expertise near by.
We are truly grateful for Hunt's relationship with the Alberta Children's Hospital Foundation. On behalf of all of the children and families who will soon benefit from your support of this facility, thank you Hunt Consolidated!
TransCanada Pipelines
TransCanada Pipelines has been a dedicated and on-going supporter of the Alberta Children's Hospital for over ten years. Their generous donation of $750,000 in support of the new hospital helped the Foundation succeed in our goal of raising funds for excellence in child health care.
This remarkable gift has been designated to the Telehealth program, which uses communication technology to deliver health care services, information and education to participants who are physically separated. This technology overcomes barriers of geography, transportation, and infrastructure, to bring together patients and health care professionals, allowing them to share clinical information on screen and in real time.
Currently, 30% of children and youth admitted to Alberta Children's Hospital are from communities outside Calgary. Telehealth technology is vitally important to support these families who are dealing with sensitive complex medical conditions.
We are exceedingly grateful for TransCanada Pipelines' generosity in support of the Alberta Children's Hospital Foundation. Not only have they helped to fund such initiatives as the Telehealth program, but they continue to lend their support in volunteering at our events, hosting their own, and contributing to a variety of other programs and equipment throughout the hospital. Thank you TransCanada. Your continued contribution and commitment is truly inspiring!

Kids Helping Kids!
Billy Borger is a proud supporter of the Alberta Children's Hospital. This year, for Billy's 3rd birthday he chose the hospital to be the recipient of his birthday gifts. He asked his family and friends to give birthday money to the hospital in lieu of buying presents for him. After his party Billy presented the hospital with over $1000!
His sister Katie came along to help. Katie is a great role model for Billy because she chose to support the hospital on her last two birthdays and was able to raise over $5000!
A big Thank You to Billy and Katie for showing us all how young people can make such an incredible difference.
Buffalo Target Shooters Annual Charity Match
Each year, the Buffalo Target Shooters Association holds a target shooting event at the Steve Johnson Range to raise money for the Alberta Children's Hospital Foundation.
Since the tournament began in 1994, they have raised over $23,000 for our kids. These funds have supported greatest needs at the hospital, including life-saving equipment and family centred programs.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank the organizers and supporters of the Buffalo Target Shooters Association for their commitment and efforts to the Alberta Children's Hospital.
We look forward to celebrating the 15th anniversary of this event in May!
Rockford Developments
This past December, Calgary-based Rockford Developments generously donated $50,000 to help oncology experts at the Alberta Children's Hospital to purchase an AB3130 Genetic Analyzer, an essential piece of equipment that will enhance the diagnosis and treatment of children who are battling cancer.
Currently, Calgary does not have a Genetic Analyzer. Blood and marrow samples are sent out-of-province for assessment, incurring additional cost and delay in diagnosis. Acquiring this state-of-the-art equipment will allow the Blood and Marrow Transplant (BMT) team to efficiently analyze the blood and marrow of pediatric BMT recipients, create new donor opportunities by enabling the analysis of parents as potential BMT donors, enable pre-natal genetic screening and help direct more effective treatment methods for children with cancer and other immune deficiency disorders.
This piece of equipment is part of a larger vision of building our oncology program and providing national leadership in the fight against childhood cancer - a vision that will provide new hope for survivorship, reduce treatment side effects and contribute to innovative and enhanced treatment for children with cancer.
Thank you Rockford Developments! It is because of community partners like you that our child cancer team is poised to become a leader in discovering new cancer treatments and cures to help children locally, nationally and internationally.

Enerplus Resources is a dedicated supporter of the Alberta Children's Hospital Foundation. In addition to being a donor to the new hospital Campaign and renewing their corporate commitment to the greatest needs of the hospital, they have stepped up with a creative and engaging way to raise money for the kids. Ranchlands Community School
Thanks to our friends at Ranchlands Community School, we have seen how a little imagination and generosity can go such a long way. Last spring, the Grade Six Gate Class opened a school concession called GATE'R'Aide. They sold healthy snacks and FRENZ figurines, small "magic" figurines made by the students. FRENZ could be stored in your pocket so that you always would have a "friend" with you no matter where you went! At the end of the year they had managed to raise over $2 thousand for the kids at the Alberta Children's Hospital. The students were an enthusiastic bunch and even made it on Global news when they came to the hospital for a cheque presentation. We are very thankful for their hard work and generosity. What a wonderful example of how young people can make a difference!
Thank you GATE'R'Aide!
Daylight Resources Trust
We were thrilled to receive a gift of $50,000 from Daylight Resources Trust and their generous employees and guests who raised funds by bidding on items at a silent auction in November 2007.
These funds will go to support two pieces of equipment at the hospital - Newborn Hearing Screening (NBHS) which is a way of identifying hearing loss in infants soon after birth, and a cardiac monitor for our Human Patient Simulator (HPS) which is a leading edge training tool that supports the important teaching role of the hospital.
We are very grateful to Daylight Resources Trust. Thanks to their generosity we can continue to supply our experts with the tools and equipment they need to help sick kids.
Thank you.

They then convoyed over to the Alberta Children's Hospital to deliver all of the toys. There were over 60 vehicles in attendance and it was quite a joyous sight when the Christmas convoy arrived at the hospital. And now Aeroplan is offering everyone the chance to give the gift of giving with the Aeroplan Beyond Miles Donation Greeting Cards. If you donate 2,500 Aeroplan Miles to a Beyond Miles partner, such as Kids' Horizons, in someone else's name as a special gift, Aeroplan will send them a personalized card to notify them of your gift. You may also go on-line at www.aeroplan.com/donate and donate other amounts of miles directly to Kids' Horizons.

Chad's baby sister Zoe passed away in 2004 after spending 12 months at the Alberta Children's Hospital. Since then, he has dedicated his birthday to raising money in her memory by requesting donations for the hospital in lieu of birthday presents.
Chad's kindness will help children and families at the Alberta Children's Hospital to continue to receive the very best in family centred child health care. Chad has demonstrated the true spirit of generosity and has set a wonderful example of how young people can make a difference.

Costco stores raise money each year during the Miracle Month of May through the sale of Children's Miracle Network paper balloons. Stores raise additional funds by holding events such as raffles, bake sales, dunk tanks, BBQs and breakfasts.
We are very fortunate to have incredible community partners like Costco that have a passion for the Alberta Children's Hospital and we are very grateful to their staff and customers for helping us to hope, help and heal.

Stampede City Progress Club
A generous pledge of $250,000 by the members of the Stampede City Progress Club will fully fund an Eyefollower System to improve communication for children.
The leading-edge technology of the Eyefollower System will enable children to gain independence in communication, learning and control of environmental aids for day-to-day living that is currently unavailable in southern Alberta. This service is provided by ACETS (Augmentative Communication and Educational Technology Service) at the Alberta Children's Hospital.
The Eyefollower System uses unique eye-tracking technology to improve the ability for children with communication difficulties to express wants, needs and ideas. The Eyefollower System is a hands-off computer that tracks a child's gazepoint or allows the child to interact with their surroundings using only their eyes.Children with cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophies, spinal cord injury and multiple sclerosis will benefit from the system to expand communication and learning opportunities.
Thank you Stampede City Progress Club for helping children and their families in our community!

Andora Energy Partners
A family pet can be a powerful part of a child's healing team. Research has shown that the interaction between a child and his/her pet is calming, stress reducing and helps with pain management. Now, thanks to the leadership of Tyler and Susan Cran and the outstanding generosity of Andora Energy Partners, children who are in long term care will be able to schedule a visit and play with their beloved pet inside the Pet Room at the new Alberta Children's Hospital.
A recent pledge of $500,000 will create a legacy of the Andora Energy Partners Pet Therapy Endowment Fund, that will allow children and families who are coping with hospitalization, illness, and treatment to benefit from the healing affection of their pet. Working with Child Life Therapists, the visit will also be photographed and diarized to tide the child over until the next pet visit.
Thanks Andora Energy Partners for supporting the Pet Therapy Program: the only one of its kind in North America!

TELUS
A Canadian first made possible by our friends at TELUS!
For more than a decade, TELUS has been a loyal and generous supporter of the Alberta Children?s Hospital Foundation. Over the years, TELUS employees have given with their hearts, organizing fundraising initiatives including last summer?s Skins Games as well as dollar-for-dollar matching programs to support excellence in child healthcare at our hospital. Ronald McDonald House Charities - A partnership of care
The Alberta Children's Hospital Foundation is proud to partner with Ronald McDonald House Charities to help those who need it most ? kids and families who utilize services at our hospital.
A recent $27,800 grant from Ronald McDonald House Charities has enabled the hospital to implement a T.V. Networking Initiative to allow kids to connect with the world while hospitalized. By networking televisions throughout the hospital, kids are not only provided with entertainment but also with a means for them to connect with others through a shared experience.
Ronald McDonald House Charities has been a partner of the Alberta Children's Hospital Foundation for over a decade, providing nearly $90,000 in grants to enhance the healthcare experience of kids in our community.

Calgary Produce Marketing Association 2006 Harvest Sale
Thank you for all you do for the kids!
Thank you to everyone who came out on a gorgeous weekend to buy fresh produce and support the Alberta Children's Hospital Foundation! This was a milestone year for CalPMA as they reached the $500,000 mark in support of the healthy futures for the kids in our community.
Whether you gave your time, energy, product, resources - we sincerely thank you.
Proceeds from this event will help fund the Healing Gardens at the new Alberta Children's Hospital. The gardens mean more places to heal, grow and play for the kids and families who need it most.
Thanks you for helping to make this possible.
Trotter & Morton - Lighting up the lives of children!
Not only are they putting their hearts and souls into helping build the new Alberta Children?s Hospital, the electrical contractors at Trotter & Morton are also leaving an additional legacy behind.
Over the past year, Trotter & Morton electricians (many of whom are dads with young families) helped inspire the generosity of others through a silent auction and other fundraising events. Their efforts were matched by the company for a total of $75,000!
This money is being used to build a double tree-house in the Healing Garden at our new hospital called "The Backyard". This special tree-house has its two houses connected together by a bridge. And the whole thing is wheel-chair accessible!
Our thanks to Trotter & Morton and all its employees for their hard work and big hearts.
We raise funds for excellence in child health & family centred care. More...
