Friday, August 31st started off normally for our family, until our daughter Evelyn complained of abdominal pain and we took her into the Alberta Children’s Hospital. What we originally thought might be appendicitis was later discovered to be a softball-sized tumour in her abdomen, and was further diagnosed as Stage 4 Neuroblastoma, a type of cancer stemming from the adrenal glands.
Evelyn had the tumour removed on September 25th. Unfortunately bone marrow aspirations done during surgery showed the cancer has metastasized to Evelyn’s bone marrow so removing the primary tumor was only the first step of what will be a long journey towards getting our girl back to healthy.
Evelyn has currently completed six rounds of chemotherapy. Following these six rounds, she will receive two bone marrow (stem cell) transplants with high dose chemo. After the transplant, Evelyn will undergo radiation, and then immunotherapy.
Our hope is that by December of 2019 Evelyn will be finished treatment.
Evelyn's care will mean long stays at the hospital, logistics planning, and some tough days. This journey for our family is made hopeful by the insights of an amazing team of doctors and nurses, and the ever-present support of friends and family.
We are so grateful to the Alberta Children’s Hospital and the incredible support the offer not to just Evelyn but also to Mike, Harper and myself. Because of that and the around the clock care and dedication they are providing Wvekyn we are asking our friends and family to join us in making a donation to the hospital during the Radiothon.
