Here’s what you can do to help:

Create a Fundraising Page on KidsRadiothon.com

It’s quick and easy to set up a page, either for yourself or a team! Set a fundraising goal and make that first donation yourself to demonstrate your own commitment to helping the kids at the Alberta Children’s Hospital. Fundraising pages make it easy for you to reach out and inspire friends to get make a one-time gift or to sign up as a monthly Miracle Maker donor. Thanks to an incredible gift from Tom Crist and the Crist Family Foundation, new monthly Miracle Maker donors who sign up during the Country 105 Caring for Kids Radiothon will have their monthly gifts matched for a full year! And any current Miracle Maker monthly donors who increase their gift will also be matched. That means their generosity goes twice as far — all year long — to ensure children continue to have access to the life-saving, life-changing care, research and treatments they need. We will provide you with a handy toolkit to make the experience a meaningful team-building event for you and your family or your office!

Kids Can Be Champions, Too! And Their Fundraising Will Be MATCHED

That’s right. Kids can also fundraise during the Radiothon. All donations to their fundraising pages will be MATCHED by our generous sponsor, Elevated YYC, up to a maximum $10,000! Fast Facts: Real Life at the Alberta Children’s Hospital

100,000: That’s the number of children and families who rely on care from the Alberta Children’s Hospital in a typical year.

Mental health: Approximately 1 in 5 children has a diagnosable psychiatric concern. Seventy percent of mental health issues start in childhood and they are the single-largest health problem facing young people in Canada today.

Thanks to community support, The Summit opened in March of 2023. As one of the most research-intensive mental health facilities for young people in Canada, the Centre offers walk-in services seven days a week, 9 am to 9 pm.

Childhood Cancer: Each year, between 80 and 90 children and teens are diagnosed with cancer at the Alberta Children’s Hospital.

Forty years ago, 80% of kids diagnosed with cancer died. Today 80% live. But we still need to do better. Current treatment is so harsh that about 80% of survivors will suffer at least one long-term side effect. This means that for every 100 children diagnosed with cancer:

  • 64 will have lasting side effects
  • 20 will not survive

It’s not enough to survive cancer. Experts at Alberta Children’s Hospital want kids to thrive after cancer. Donor support for the Pediatric Clinical Trials Program last year meant more kids participated in new clinical trials to treat cancer

Bone Marrow Transplants: The Alberta Children’s Hospital is the largest Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) centre in western Canada and the second largest in the country. The hospital was the first in western Canada to give a BMT to a child with sickle cell anemia. Last year, there were 40 BMTs performed at the hospital to save kids from cancer.

Surgery: There are more than 10,000 operations at the Alberta Children’s Hospital in a typical year. Of those, approximately 20% are on an emergency basis.

Life-Saving Care by the Numbers

In a typical year at the Alberta Children’s Hospital, there are:

  • More than 75,000 visits to the Emergency Department.
  • More than 800 kids who are so sick they need to be cared for one-on-one in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU).
  • 250 babies who require specialized care in the Edwards Family Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
  • More than 60,000 diagnostic scans done, including X-ray, CT, ultrasound, MRI, nuclear medicine and interventional radiology.
  • Around 300 transports of children to the hospital who are too sick to be cared for in their home communities. The team is dispatched, on average, twice a day.

Transport: The hospital is home to a Pediatric Critical Care Transport Team – dedicated transport team members travel to smaller hospitals by ground ambulance, plane or helicopter to stabilize sick or injured kids before bringing them to the Alberta Children’s Hospital for critical care. Picture an ICU in the air or on the road.

Every Cure Starts With Research: The Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute brings together more than 330 scientists dedicated to discovering better ways to diagnose, treat and ultimately prevent pediatric illnesses. By embedding world-class researchers directly within the Alberta Children’s Hospital, breakthroughs can move faster — from the lab to the bedside — so children benefit sooner from the latest advances in care.
