Children’s Hospital Lottery 2025 Changes Lives

At just nine days old, baby Avery was suddenly lethargic, labouring to breathe. Her worried parents rushed her to the Emergency Department at the Alberta Children’s Hospital.

Within moments of arriving, Avery was whisked away into a Trauma Room where dozens of people – nurses, doctors and respiratory experts started caring for her. Machines and monitors appeared at her bedside. Someone was “bagging” Avery to manually push air into her lungs as she could no longer breathe on her own. Next, she was intubated and placed on a ventilator to take over her breathing so she’d be safe.

Avery’s body was being attacked by a serious respiratory virus as well as strep. She was so sick she needed the specialized one-to-one care of the hospital’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.

Thankfully, after nine days of intense monitoring of her tiny heart and lungs and life-saving interventions, Avery’s parents were able to take their newborn baby home again. Today she is a strong, sweet, clever two-year-old girl who loves gymnastics class, dancing with her Daddy, singing songs with her Mommy, and playing with her sister.

“There are no words to explain the immeasurable gratitude we have toward the Alberta Children’s Hospital and the people who work there,” say Lexi.

“I don’t know where we would be without them. Avery is strong and healthy because of the brilliant people who cared for her and because they had the right equipment, funded by people in our community who generously supported the hospital to help save kids like her.”

Proceeds of this year’s Children’s Hospital Lottery will equip critical care specialists with more life-saving, life-changing technology, like state-of-the-art cardio-respiratory monitors to diagnose and quickly respond to critical situations more rapidly than ever.
