Brain Imaging for a Healthy Tomorrow (BRIGHT)
The Alberta Children’s Hospital is home to the internationally-recognized Child & Adolescent Imaging Research (CAIR) program, a team of researchers and an MRI scanner dedicated to studying the developing brain.
However, having an MRI can be intimidating or overwhelming for kids, especially those with neurodevelopmental disorders such as ADHD and autism. Children with these diagnoses are often unable to tolerate an MRI, limiting the ability to better understand their conditions.
Through Brain Imaging for a Healthy Tomorrow (BRIGHT), the CAIR team can recruit in-house expertise to develop new neuroimaging techniques and specialized protocols, making scans shorter for kids and reducing motion sensitivity to gather the best-quality images. This will make it possible for more kids to contribute to research and allow the team to lead multi-site studies, which is currently limited by technological capacity.
