Meet the Experts of the Alberta Children’s Hospital

Since 2003, the Country 105 Caring for Kids Radiothon has been a window into the life-changing, life-saving care that happens every day at the Alberta Children’s Hospital. And this year will be no different. Join us for the most heartwarming radio event of the year and show your support for sick and injured kids and the experts who care for them. This year, there are five Mega Milestone Power Hours, focusing on funding critical equipment or research to help build healthier futures for all children in our community.

Dr. Adam Kirton, Pediatric Neurosurgeon

Children living with conditions such as a stroke, spinal cord injury or cerebral palsy can suffer from severe limitations in their mobility and capacity to communicate. Some children with the most severe physical disabilities – unable to walk, talk, or use their hands – are highly intelligent and capable, but “locked in”. Your donations will help purchase 17 At-Home Brain Computer Interface Kits (BCI)! Dr. Kirton explains how this crucial technology will help children who are “locked in” interact with their environment in a way never before possible! Read how BCI has been life changing for Nina.

Dr. Jay Riva-Cambrin, Pediatric Neurosurgeon

When it comes to operating in and around the brain, every millimetre counts and precision is everything. Surgeons are always grateful when they have access to equipment and technology that can increase their accuracy. This year, your donations will help purchase Neurosurgery Precision Kit (Endoscope and Camera System) that will provide the best images and agility to surgeons while performing delicate and complex procedures within the brain. Watch Dr. Riva-Cambrin’s interview to learn more about this precision technology. Oliver’s Grandma shared with Global Calgary how state-of-the-art equipment can make a difference.

Dr. Vince Grant, Emergency Physician

This year, your donations will help purchase a CPR Feedback System – crucial equipment that will help the members of the Code Blue Team to provide the highest quality CPR to their patients in cardiac or respiratory failure. With your support we are also going to purchase eight portable Vital Signs Monitors that have been deemed even more crucial now that our frontline workers are caring for COVID-positive patients. Dr. Grant speaks more to the impact on care that these pieces of equipment have for the care of patients at the Alberta Children’s Hospital.

Dr. Doug Mahoney, Childhood Cancer Researcher

This year, your donations will help support ground-breaking Childhood Cancer Research at the Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute so families like Julian’s never have to hear the words “We’ve run out of options”. Watch Dr. Mahoney’s interview to learn more about how this research will make a difference.

Dr. Jeremy Luntley, Pediatric Anesthetist

This year, your donations will help purchase Anesthesia Pumps and a Monitor crucial technology that will help Anesthetists at the Alberta Children’s Hospital to deliver the most precise doses of anesthetic to children undergoing surgery. Watch Dr. Luntley’s interview to learn more about this critical technology. Dini and his mom also shared their story with Global Calgary.
