Healing injuries and spirits with Life Cycle

Healing injuries and spirits with Life Cycle

This month-long cycling challenge supports vital therapeutic arts programs that lift the spirits of kids like Henry at the Stollery Children's Hospital Foundation and the Alberta Children's Hospital.

Specialists at the Alberta Children’s Hospital and the Stollery Children’s Hospital can heal more than injuries and illnesses – they heal spirits, too.

When you sign up and fundraise for Life Cycle, presented by Mattamy Homes, you support Child Life programs like music therapy, art therapy and horticultural therapy that support physical, mental and emotional healing, and allow kids like Henry to simply be kids, even when in hospital.

The Alberta Children’s Hospital has become a second home to two-year-old Henry, who was born in kidney failure. While he waits for a kidney transplant, Henry visits the hospital four times a week for life-saving hemodialysis, which filters his blood since his kidneys can’t.

Sitting in a hospital bed several days a week for several hours at a time is hard for a busy toddler. Compassionate Child Life specialists and music therapists visit Henry to play games and musical instruments with him, distracting him from his long dialysis treatments, lessening the stress of hospitalization and adding a bit of fun, too.

“Henry loves to play the instruments, but he prefers the drums―of course, the loudest instrument!” says his mom, Lisa. “And we appreciate the help entertaining a two-year-old who just wants to get out and run around and play.”

Music engages multiple parts of the brain, and at the Alberta Children’s Hospital and the Stollery Children’s Hospital, certified music therapists use it to promote healing and bring joy to kids and families who are going through tough times. It’s just one of the many therapeutic arts made available to families through the Child Life program, which you support when you register and fundraise through Life Cycle, a month-long cycling challenge that begins June 1.

Learn more about Life Cycle and how easy it is to support these vital Child Life programs at both the Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary and the Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton.
