Hockey Marathon Shoots, Kids Like Easton Score

Last June, parents Amanda and Jeff were given the completely unexpected news that their healthy, active nine-year-old boy, Easton, had a brain tumour that required immediate surgery.

Still reeling, just two days later, they walked him into his first 10-hour surgery to remove the mass, followed a few weeks later by another surgery to ensure all margins were clear. The biopsy had revealed it was indeed a cancerous tumour known as medulloblastoma.

“It’s your worst nightmare,” says Amanda. “Just hearing the term ‘brain cancer’ is a huge shock, and then it just becomes overwhelming.”

There were blood draws, scans, IVs and countless visits from doctors and specialists. Easton’s treatment plan called for multiple trips to the hospital for chemotherapy and other check-ups. It was sad to see that with each trip, he was a little more on edge in an already stressful enough situation.

Easton is just one of dozens of children in our community whose families received a cancer diagnosis last year. And while survival rates have improved, the reality is current treatments are hard on kids.

Researchers and scientists all over the world are working hard on new treatments and cures, and Hockey Marathon for the Kids aims to bring those advancements here, through the Pediatric Clinical Trials program.

The Alberta Children’s Hospital is already a leader in the delivery of novel treatments for childhood cancer and serious blood disorders. Donations made in support of Team Hope and Team Cure will take it a step further, allowing our experts to deliver even more complex clinical trials to more children in our community, safely and effectively, giving new hope to families facing the unthinkable.

Easton is a huge hockey fan and, like his family, will be cheering on these 44 players when they take to the ice at Chestermere Recreation Centre April 5-16.

“We are grateful, to the players, and all the donors who step up in support of this event. To know it could help other families means a lot to ours.”
